Occupational Description:

Petroleum Equipment Installers work in the downstream petroleum sector of the Oil and Gas Industry.  They install and remove storage, transfer, handling and dispensing equipment for liquid fuel products.

Petroleum Equipment Installers perform their work at a variety of job sites, including primary fuel terminals, bulk fuel outlets, airports, railways, ports, bus and taxi fleet terminals, retail fuel outlets, large public and commercial facilities.

Due to the products handled in the equipment they service, Petroleum Equipment Installers must conform to a range of federal, provincial and municipal regulations in the performance of their duties.  They must have the skills and knowledge to maintain a safe work site and prevent damage to the environment and harm to human beings through correct fuel and vapour containment.

  • Program Duration & Structure:
  • The program will be delivered in a variety of formats combining in-school and work-based training, all designed to meet the competency standards and profile defined by the industry and approved ITA and will generally take 3 years to complete.
    1. Total In-school:                             16 weeks*
    2. Total Work-based:                        4000 hrs
  • *The in-school / technical training requirement is typically met through block release training delivered by an ITA approved training provider.  It can also be met through level challenge exam where these options are available.

Program Completion Requirements:

  1. Completion of 4000 hours workplace hours:

  • Completion of technical training:
  • In school and practical competency assessments; and mark of 70% on ITA written level examination on the content of the following courses:
    1. Level 1, Common Core
    2. Level 2, Petroleum Equipment Installer
  • Level 1 and 2 technical training requirements may be met through successful challenge of ITA written level examinations and practical skill assessment exams.
  • Program Challenge Requirements:
  • The following requirements must be met in order to challenge the BC C of Q written examination
    1. Completion of levels 1 and 2 technical training assessments
    2. 4000 hrs work experience
    3. or 6000 of documented directly related work experience
  • Note: Typical trades that may have transferable skills and want to challenge Level 1 are: Industrial and/or Construction Electrician; Millwright; Welder; Industrial Instrumentation Mechanic; Electronics Technician; Steamfitter / Pipefitter and Gasfitter.
  • Program Pre-requisites:
  • Recommended Education: Grade 12 or equivalent including English 12, and one of each Algebra 11 or Trades Math 11 and Physics 11 or Science and Technology 11

Assessment Methods:

  1. In-school assessments (practical and written exams)
  2. Work-based assessments (practical) (voluntary Logbook)
  3. Final Assessments (BC Certificate of Qualification written examination)
  4. Level 1 ITA exams available for challenge

Program Providers:

Institution-based component of the program will be delivered by public post-secondary institutions, private training institutions, and secondary schools that have been approved by the ITA.
