Occupational Description:
Petroleum Equipment Service Technicians work in the downstream petroleum sector of the Oil and Gas Industry. They repair and maintain storage, transfer, handling and dispensing equipment for liquid fuel products.
Petroleum Equipment Service Technicians perform their work at a variety of job sites, including primary fuel terminals, bulk fuel outlets, airports, railways, ports, bus and taxi fleet terminals, retail fuel outlets, large public and commercial facilities, warehouses and repair labs. These skilled workers might travel to several work sites in one day, and may complete assignments in remote locations.
Due to the products handled in the equipment they service, Petroleum Equipment Service Technicians must conform to a range of federal, provincial and municipal regulations in the performance of their duties. They must have the skills and knowledge to maintain a safe work site and prevent damage to the environment and harm to human beings through correct fuel and vapour containment.
Program Duration & Structure:
Work-based training, all designed to meet the competency standards and profile defined by the industry and approved ITA and will generally take 3 years to complete.

Completion of technical training:
Mark of 70% on ITA written level examination on the content of the following courses:
- Level 1, Common Core
- Level 2, Petroleum Equipment Service Technician 1
- Level 3, Petroleum Equipment Service Technician 2
Level 1, 2 and 3 technical training requirements may be met through successful challenge of ITA written level examinations and practical skill assessment exams.
Assessment Methods:
- In-school assessments (practical and written exams)
- Work-based assessments (practical) (voluntary Logbook)
- Final Assessments (BC Certificate of Qualification written examination)
